Dark is a masterfully filmed series that slowly and grippingly explores the labyrinth of secrets in a deeply troubled town.

Dark is a serious, serious affair, and once the curtain has lifted over the mystery in this plot-heavy narrative, all that is left is a bunch of humourless and unremarkable characters.

Dark stumbles, with no small amount of self-importance, into the same erroneous belief as Westworld, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones: That the twist in the story ... is enough to sustain a narrative that lacks the scaffolding of strong characterization.

Where Stranger Things is deft, Dark is heavy-handed; where Stranger Things is well-paced, Dark moves at the speed of a dump truck lost in a bog; where Stranger Things' kids are likeable and funny, Dark's are sullen and sour.

Watching Dark, you might be left with the idea that there are no new ideas. Only remakes and reruns.

I know the Germans are said to be a serious lot, but the nonstop grimness of Dark strains both credulity and interest.

But Dark, while being a good series, and having some truly intriguing aspects, doesn't have enough of an emotional hook to make it a truly standout show.

It feels safe to say Dark may be one of Netflix's strongest shows to date.

Following the instantaneous success brought by the debut season of "Mindhunter" and the masterful season two of "Stranger Things," the streaming gargantuan is back at it again with their most morose and twisted series to date.

While the sci-fi details of Stranger Things ramp up the entertainment value of the series - "Wow, that tween just threw a whole van into the air with her mind!" - Dark uses time travel to help it interrogate the big questions of the world.

Dark certainly has what it takes to open up a new market, and therefore change the landscape of streaming shows once again.

Dark encompasses all the connotations that come with its title, for better or worse. A German fairytale about humanity's reach and our desire to exceed it, the series can go lots of exciting places if it lands a season 2.
December 11, 2017
Dark doesn't have the nostalgia hook of Stranger Things, and so may not have the same broad appeal, but it's every bit as gripping and arguably spookier.

Minds blown yet? Mine is too. Not to worry, though. Dark has already been renewed for another season, and thankfully, they're looking at a full year from now for its release.
December 1, 2017
Dark is the first German produced Netflix original series and it makes every effort to make its mark. And succeeds.
January 22, 2018
Dark is one of those shows that stays with you long after you've finished watching.
March 28, 2018
If Stranger Things is a big bowl of macaroni and cheese made with that lurid orange cheddar you can only get in America, Dark is a gamy Old World stew ladled out from a pot that has been bubbling away for centuries.
December 26, 2017
Is it the new Stranger Things? I don't know, but I'm intrigued enough to stick around and find out.
November 23, 2017
If you're in search of jump-scares and tangible terrors, look elsewhere. Dark is more concerned with the slow burn, and creating the subtle, increasing feeling that all is not right in the world.

The time travel conceit does more than give us a window into how these families have evolved over many decades - it's brings a whole new meaning to "things are not quite what they seem here."
