The latest Philip K Dick adaptation is a beautifully austere meditation on the kind of question that might underpin a fairytale: is it better to live a happy dream or to see the world clearly?

With this series and Netflix's Black Mirror, the sci-fi anthology series is now back as a revitalized genre.

Even when Electric Dreams' episodes are flat and predictable - and frankly, "Father Thing" is both - they're still well-acted.

Electric Dreams has something that predates Charlie Brooker's semi-dystopian tech drama: the work of the iconic genre writer for which it's named...it employs an impressive roster of writers, directors, and actors to put their own spin on Dick's oeuvre.

Unlike "Black Mirror," though, much of "Electric Dreams" is generally a more optimistic show, with less fatalist themes.

There's so much more to discover here. That's always been Philip K. Dick's gift - a handful of pages in one short story spark countless new ideas and questions. The frustration doesn't diminish the experience of such a well-acted, enthralling thriller.

With diverse storytelling and visuals, there's a lot to glom onto and enjoy in Electric Dreams. Like people who obsessively rank or debate episodes of Black Mirror, you can just assume that your particular highs and lows will be different.

All in all, Electric Dreams contains more hits than misses and a couple of real gems.

Electric Dreams works because there's a fascinating nugget of insight about humanity in every episode, even if they don't always succeed.

The episodes in Electric Dreams are far more understated and, while they have their share of plot twists, lean more heavily toward subtle mystery than moments of shock or nastiness.

Reality isn't always recognizable in these stories, but the characters that populate them are all too real.

Overall, there's a lot to get excited about. The man behind Blade Runner has some wildly imaginative ideas and it's great to see them brought to life by a very talented group of writers and directors.

Electric Dreams strikes the balance deftly, creating short, self-contained films out of each episode without making you feel like you need 45 more minutes to grasp the story.
