Critic Consensus: Thanks to a liberal dose of propulsive, bloody action and enough compelling character moments to reward longtime fans, The Walking Dead's fifth season continues to deliver top-notch entertainment.

The Walking Dead: The Complete Fifth Season represents a major step down for a show that had seemingly finally figured out what it was missing.
The season five opener wastes no time turning up the tension to 11. If it's a sign of things to come, we're in for a great season.
Every instance of true sentiment is balanced with moments of horror.
The show's fifth season seems much more propulsive, setting up new plots and then moving through them with surprising haste.
Audience Reviews for The Walking Dead: Season 5
This season 5 of The Walking Dead featured some of its best episodes but definitely some of their worse too, making it a very uneven and unbalanced season as usual with this show. When it's able to create amazing moments of tension and terror, like the fantastic season opener, and at the same time being able to flesh out some characters in the process, that's when it works the best. When you have dedicated episodes of these guys taking shelter from a storm, an entire episode with an awful hipstery filter fest, even more cringy dialogue and ridiculous death scenes that mean nothing other than just being shocking and violent; well that's when the show suffers. And it suffers far too often to be considered great television. This is probably my last season of TWD, there just isn't much holding me onto it, asides from unintentionally bad dialogues that always make me smile.
The fifth season of The Walking Dead is a bloody-good & entertaining batch of episodes. Filled with stylistic directions and storytelling along with enticing dramatization of the characters, this season give fans everything and more, which continuously builds up this acclaimed series. 4.5/5
Explosive (literally) premiere episode for Season 5 or the hit AMC series! Loved every minute of it! I very rare moment of happiness for these beloved characters, which I can only assume will be met with blood and heartbreak as the season progresses. High hopes for this season! Hopefully, they do not disappoint.
